Drooping eyelids are either hereditary or develop with age. This causes the upper eyelid to sag. This often makes the eye appear smaller and gives the face a tired look. You’ve probably already tried everything—creams, eye pads, or ice cubes on the swollen-looking eyelid—and nothing has helped.

How do I know if I need an eyelid lift?

If your eyelid is too heavy and impairs your vision, most people want to take active steps to address the issue. A drooping eyelid can become a source of psychological stress when your facial expression sends the wrong signals: You’re actually a cheerful person who goes about your day with ease, but your eyes convey exhaustion, sadness, or even anger.

During an upper eyelid lift, the upper eyelid is tightened so that your eyes regain a youthful and fresh appearance. An eyelid lift is recommended starting around age 30.

How will my drooping eyelids be corrected?

First, our surgeon marks the eye to indicate where the incisions will be made and how much skin will be removed. The markings are made while the patient is standing or sitting, so that we can take gravity into account. Next comes the anesthesia—the surgery is performed either under twilight sedation or, at the patient’s request, under local anesthesia.

During droopy eyelid surgery, the epidermis is separated from the subcutaneous tissue and the muscles. Excess skin, a small section of muscle if necessary, and fatty tissue are then removed. We place the suture directly within the eyelid crease so that no scars are visible after healing. The eyelid surgery takes about 30 to 45 minutes.

After Eyelid Surgery: When Will I Be Ready to Go Out Again?

After your eyelid surgery, you will remain at our office for about two hours for observation. The stitches will be removed after 5–6 days; although some swelling or minor bruising may still be present afterward, these can be easily concealed.

You'll be able to see the first results after 1–2 months. The final result will be achieved after about 6–12 months.
