How breast implants feelHow it feels and other questions about breast augmentation

Many of our patients who are planning to undergo breast augmentation surgery ask us very similar questions time and time again. We answer these questions during consultation sessions, which we conduct either at our office or via online video. We have compiled a list of these questions—and our answers—for you here.

What do breast implants feel like? Can you feel them?

Will breast implants feel like a foreign object? Definitely not. In the first few days after the procedure, you’ll feel an unusual heaviness in your chest area—but that will go away relatively quickly. The more time that passes, the more natural your breasts will feel, and the more natural they’ll look.

How do your breasts feel after breast augmentation surgery? Is it very painful?

You shouldn't expect to experience any pain at all. For a few days after the surgery, you may feel some discomfort, such as a pulling or tight sensation. If you are more sensitive and do feel pain, you can take pain medication. Our surgeon, Karen Towmasjan, will prescribe this for you immediately after the surgery.

What if the implants suddenly start to feel strange and you experience severe pain?

If you notice that your breast has suddenly become very hard or has shifted position, and you’re also experiencing pain, please contact our office immediately. It could be capsular fibrosis. This condition is generally very rare, but you should still be aware of it.

Can you have a mammogram if you have breast implants? Does breast cancer screening work with implants?

In principle, you can still undergo mammography screening after breast augmentation. You should simply inform the radiology technician about your breast implants before the mammogram so that she can use the correct examination technique. If the implant does interfere, other examination methods are available (e.g., ultrasound or MRI).

Is it possible to breastfeed with breast implants?

Yes, it's possible and completely safe for the baby.
