Before Cosmetic Surgery

Once the decision to undergo cosmetic surgery has been made, most people become impatient. They want everything to happen as quickly as possible—preferably today. The decision has been made; many people think that another discussion about it seems unnecessary and only wastes valuable time. That’s a fallacy! Berlin-based surgeon Karen Towmasjan explains why at least one in-depth consultation is necessary before cosmetic surgery.

Mr. Towmasjan, if I already know exactly what cosmetic procedure I want to have done, why can't I just schedule a surgery appointment right away? After all, it's already clear what needs to be done.

„It’s just not always clear—that’s the point. Just because a patient has a specific goal in mind doesn’t mean there’s only one way to achieve it. Today, we have a wide range of surgical options. Which one is best suited to the individual patient and their situation is decided during the consultation. That’s what makes the consultation one of my core responsibilities.”.

So, the consultation isn't just for getting to know each other?

Of course, it’s important to get to know each other. It’s great when a relationship of trust develops between the patient and the surgeon. The chemistry should be right. During the appointment, we discuss the patient’s wishes and the available options—what the patient has in mind isn’t always possible or advisable. Sometimes I have to be very clear that the procedure the patient has planned isn’t at all possible or necessary in their specific case. In that case, I suggest an alternative, and most of the time the result turns out even better than hoped for.

What else do you discuss before cosmetic surgery?

It’s important to me that patients go into surgery with realistic expectations. That’s why I explain the potential risks and possible complications to everyone, as well as the chances of success. I explain what to do and what to avoid before and after surgery. And of course, I share my patients’ excitement! It’s always wonderful to look forward together to the new body image that lies ahead.

What about the cost of cosmetic surgery?

That’s why the consultation is also important. At KT-Beauty, we don’t have flat rates; everything is tailored to each individual. I can only give a fixed price after I’ve thoroughly examined the patient, listened to their wishes, and we’ve decided together on the type of procedure. After that, nothing stands in the way of the cosmetic surgery.
